We have been asked by Bournemouth Borough Council’s Road Safety Team to bring the following to your attention.
‘A lot of the parents / carers cross on the corner of Durley Road across West Hill Road onto the corner of Commercial Road, thus avoiding using the patroller’s designated crossing. This also happens on Durley Road with parents crossing at random locations rather than using the crossing.
Our patrollers have previously been trying to provide safe passage for these people by going into the road at the same time, if safe to do so, to ensure that vehicles coming from the opposite side would be obliged to stop but this is not best practice as it sends a confusing message to drivers coming from the opposite direction who may only notice the STOP sign but not see the pedestrians crossing in front of them.
In the future if the parents and children are not using the crossing, then we will not be able to provide safe passage with the use of our patroller. They will of course continue to cross those people who use their crossing in the correct way.
The school is very lucky to have two patrollers and those parents / carers who are choosing to cross in this dangerous fashion are putting their own and their children’s safety at risk. They are also sending the message to their children that this is the correct way to cross the road. When you have such a great resource for your school community, it is very important that parents and children do use it to their full advantage.’
