Children receive daily English and Mathematics lessons.
Some subjects are taught on their own. These include subjects such as Music, PE and RE. Children receive one lesson per week.
We look for every opportunity to enhance the teaching of English by relating it to our topics as well as teaching it as a discrete subject. To this end we have a flexible approach to the planning of English so that we can match genres to appropriate topics. When we change our topics we respond to this by adjusting the timing of the delivery of the English Curriculum content.
Other subjects are taught alongside each other through a theme or topic. Subjects such as History, Geography, Art, Design & Technology and Science lend themselves well to this approach. These subjects are taught in depth during the topic. The school ensures that over the academic year all pupils receive a balanced curriculum which meets the requirements laid down in the National Curriculum. No more than three subjects are taught in any one topic.
We enhance our curriculum by offering pupils the opportunity for numerous off-site visits over the course of the year. We view this as an integral part of the learning experiences that pupils can expect at St Michael’s Primary School.
